Dettifoss is a waterfall in Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland and is reputed to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. The water comes from the nearby Vatnajökull glacier, whose sediment-rich runoff colors the water a greyish white. The superlative of "most powerful" comes from its water flow times its fall distance. The water of the wide Jökulsá á Fjöllum river falls for more than 144 feet, causing a massive, crashing spray. Wikipedia
On this tour, you drive with your guide into the large lava field of the 1875 eruption in Askja, Ódáðahraun. You admire the amazing scenery formed by both fire and the glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum, the landscape is out this world, no wonder Neil Armstrong came to this place to practice for his Lunar Landing and they brought the Mars Rover here for testing before they sent it to Mars.
You hike one kilometer to Dettifoss and if you have time, you will visit two other waterfalls, Selfoss, just above Dettifoss and Hafragilsfoss, which is a little bit further down the canyon from Dettifoss. There you get to admire beautiful rock formations of basalt pillars.
